Theology
Statement of Intent
Theology is an enquiry-based subject that explores the fundamentals of human existence. In Theology lessons we pose questions about the meaning of life and death, the existence of God and Truth, expressions of identity and belonging, the practicality of ethical values, strategies for justice and peace, issues surrounding gender and relationships, the intersections of religion and society, and experiences of the transcendent. And since we engage pupils in some of the deepest of life’s questions this means that many of our lessons are discussion-based. One of the wonderful things about Theology lessons is that our pupils can come up with startling, perceptive, and profound insights into the mysteries of existence. They are places where pupils can also be the teachers.
In Theology we aim to provide opportunities for pupils to develop their religious literacy of the concepts, beliefs, practices, and values of religious worldviews so that they might understand, appreciate, and respect those belonging to other faiths to help form them as global citizens sensitive to beliefs and cultures different from their own.
As a Christian school we support the school’s mission as we aim to develop pupils’ Christian religious literacy by exploring the origins, development and diversity of Christian concepts, beliefs, practices, and values as derived from Scripture, tradition, reason and experience enabling them to give a well-informed account of, and response to, the Christian faith.
On a deeper level, we provide pupils with the chance to assess and evaluate the impact religions can have on individuals and society in the contemporary world; in particular, appreciating how Christianity influences people’s approaches to conflict, relationships, medical ethics, and the heritage and culture of Britain.
Pupils also have opportunities in Theology lessons to engage in theological and philosophical discussions and debate so that they might express, explore, critique, and reflect on their own – and others’ – beliefs, opinions, and values in a safe and mutually respectful environment.
Ultimately, through Theology, we hope to create a favourable climate for faith.
