Statement of Intent

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Mathematics is not simply a subject confined to the classroom - mathematics is all around us!

At St Bede’s we aim to provide all students with the opportunity to foster an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, along with a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. We aim to achieve success by offering a challenging and relevant curriculum that enables our students to:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.
• reason mathematically.
• solve problems by using and applying their mathematics knowledge and skills to a variety of standard and non-standard problems, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps.
• develop resilience.
• become independent learners.
• deepen their understanding by providing varied sophisticated problems.
• prepare for the rigours and demands of the GCSE course and specification.

The programme of study for Key Stage 3 builds upon learning from Key Stage 2 by developing fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. Similarly, the programme of study for Key Stage 4 builds upon learning from Key Stage 3 so once again a variety of concepts and skills will be familiar to students as they further prepare for the GCSE examination.
