Geography

Statement of Intent

Through a contemporary and engaging curriculum, we seek to develop students’ curiosity, wonder and concern about the human and physical world.

Studying geography, students investigate the connections at local, regional and global scales.

Geography is a vast and varied subject which equips students with a language to help them describe and explain the natural world as well our place within it.

We provide students with opportunities to reflect on the effects of human actions on different groups of people, the economy and the environment, while considering ways of solving problems using positive and holistic approaches.

We aim to inspire and help students develop procedural and conceptual knowledge and understanding that will enable them to explore and engage with topical geographical issues now and in the future, with confidence and competence.

Students learn about and keep returning to a number of key concepts between Years 7-11:

  • space and scale
  • place
  • processes, change, cycles, flows and connections
  • spheres of influence
  • sustainability
  • mitigating risk
  • diversity and inequality

We also help students learn how to:

  • use graphs
  • use maps
  • use numeracy and statistics in geography
  • communicate geography

You can find out more about what geography is through the Royal Geographical Society: https://www.rgs.org/geography/what-is-geography/
