Latin

Statement of Intent

The aims and objectives of the GCSE Latin department at St Bede’s are to enable our students to:

  • learn the basic structure of the written Latin language
  • recognise and appreciate the connections between Latin and English, and other modern European languages
  • encounter some of the myths and legends which shaped an ancient worldview and to become familiar with the historical events which led to the foundation of the city of Rome and it's gradual growth into an Empire
  • study first hand key passages of literature from the Latin canon, including a passage from Virgil's 'Aeneid' and poetry from other authors such as Ovid or Catullus#
  • develop an appreciation of the linguistic style and skill of such authors, appreciating a range of literary techniques such as polyptoton, tmesis and hyperbole
  • acquire the skills to pay fine attention to detail when reading and writing English, in spelling, grammar, vocabulary and construction, so that accuracy and fluency in English is greatly enhanced
